What Exactly Is Hair Grafting?
If you’re a man (or a woman) who’s experiencing hair loss, you may be wondering what options there are out there that work. You may have heard about hair grafting, but have a picture in your mind of those old fashioned hair plugs that are so obvious.
The truth is, hair grafting has come a long way, and these days, while the primary candidates for hair grafting are still those with male pattern baldness, nowadays, hair grafting can help you regain eyelashes, eyebrows and even beard hair!
How Does Hair Grafting Work?
Hair grafting involves transplanting sections of skin, with the hair follicles attached, to the area of baldness. The interesting thing is that when hair from donors with good growth is used in hair grafting, instead of your own hair, the hair from the graft retains that good growth! What that means is that if you are prone to baldness, using a donor for your hair grafting will guarantee that the new hair grows fantastically well!
Where Does the Hair Come From?
As mentioned, hair grafting could be done using donor hair. However, in many cases, hair is removed from areas of the patient’s own scalp that are balding resistant. The nape of the neck is usually a good choice for harvesting hair for hair grafting.
What to Expect from a Hair Grafting Procedure
If you’re planning, or thinking about hair grafting, it helps to know what to expect. The process starts with consultations with the surgeon who will carry out the hair grafting procedure. During these consultations, the surgeon will decide whether to opt for a single procedure, or a series of hair grafting sessions.
An antibiotic may be prescribed to prevent infection, either at the site of the hair grafting harvest, or the transplant area. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthetic, and the area where the hair for the hair grafting will be harvested is disinfected. The surgeon will then remove a strip of 1.5 x 15 to 30 centimeters from the harvest site – usually the nape of the neck.
From there, the hair follicles are transplanted to the area that needs hair grafting, taking care to make sure the new hair from the hair grafting is positioned to ensure natural growth and that it will lay correctly on the scalp.
After Surgery
After you undergo hair grafting surgery, your scalp will be bandaged, and one to two days after surgery; you will have to start shampooing the area, to prevent scabs from forming. You may be alarmed to find that within around ten days, all the “new hair” from the hair grafting will fall out! This is normal, and they will grow back in a couple of months.
If you can afford it, and are willing to undergo surgery to correct your hair loss, hair grafting is a great way to permanently solve your hair loss problems. Do a little more research into hair grafting, and find a good surgeon, and you might have found your hair loss solution!
